| Station V – The Cross is Laid on Simon of Cyrene Artists - Emily, Hannah Ruth and Carrie Brothers Somehow, once we decided on painting with oils, a picture came into my head of almost exactly how I wanted the painting to look. We decided to do a triptych (a painting with three panels). The reason for the wavy part being colorful and the outside being dark is that the wavy part is a painting of what happened to Jesus, and that's what this station is really about. The outside is generally darker because we put our, well, metaphors I guess you would call them, of carrying crosses today. - Hannah Ruth We made a picture of Simon carrying Jesus' cross. We decided to make it look like you're looking out a window (a wavy one), and in the borders we made pictures of how to help people carry their burdens, and the burdens you can have, and people with burdens. My pictures are of a person giving a homeless person money, and a dove, the sign of the Holy Spirit. - Emily I wanted to convey the transformational power of God, the mystery of evil and senselessness being transformed by God (at times with our collaboration) into hope and new possibilities. But walking through the evil and darkness will always be horrible. I pray for the struggles of people around the world. The photos are of Amache and Mduduzi, two children we know and sponsor in Ethiopia and Swaziland. Mduduzi stands before the graves of children and adults who have died from HIV/AIDS. – Carrie |
