| Station VIII – Jesus Meets The Women of Jerusalem Artist – Bettina Barrett – Watercolor " Do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children." Words I pondered through all of January and half of February before images I'd chosen became permanent. The gesture of a child reaching out to the mother was a certainty from the beginning. And the soldiers' boots around another child easily became the second. Women are life-givers. Women show emotions. Women are strong. The words 'compassion' and 'justice' kept ringing in my mind. I thought of using scales -- each with a feather to illustrate how tenuous justice rests in the balance. The goddess at the top is an ancient Scandinavian figure. She is attempting balance, holding snakes in her hands. Women are witnesses. Women weep over death-dealers. The figures left and right at the bottom are African. The one at center is Mexican. The female throughout history has stood firm in her heart's wisdom. Woman nurtures. Woman speaks out and demands justice." |
